Where check valves are installed
Fire pump discharge. NFPA 20 Section 4.16 requires a listed check valve on every fire pump discharge, immediately downstream of the pump and upstream of the discharge gate valve. The check prevents backflow from the system into the pump on shutdown and prevents reverse rotation of the pump impeller.
FDC (Fire Department Connection) trim. NFPA 13 Section 16.12.6 and NFPA 14 Section 6.4.7 require a listed check valve immediately behind every FDC inside the building. The check allows fire department augmentation of system pressure while preventing backflow from the system into the exposed FDC inlets.
Underground water main service entry. A detector check valve (or DDCA) is installed at the property line where the public water main enters the building, downstream of the PIV and upstream of the building sprinkler/standpipe feed. The 5/8 inch bypass meter detects unauthorized water use (leak or theft); the main check prevents backflow from the building system into the public main per AWWA M-14 and local utility cross-connection control.
Sprinkler riser. Listed swing check on the riser between the floor control assembly and the alarm valve, or on zone tie-ins where independent zones share a common supply.
Standpipe backflow. Listed check valve on the standpipe zone isolation, particularly on high-rise standpipe zones with separate fire pump discharge.
Listings and code acceptance
UL 312. UL 312 covers check valves for fire protection service. Listed up to 300 psi CWP, flanged and grooved end options, ductile iron body standard with bronze trim.
FM Approvals Class 1210. FM-insured property fire protection check valves. FM Global, RSA, Aviva, Zurich, Allianz, AXA Commercial, Chubb, AIG, Travelers and Intact accept FM certificate.
ULC listing for Canadian projects. CAN/ULC-S543 recognition on ULC-listed check valves. Toronto Fire Services, SIM Montreal and Ontario Building Code acceptance.
AWWA C508 detector checks. AWWA C508 covers detector check valves for underground water main service; every detector check ships with certified hydrostatic test records and bypass meter calibration.
LPCB and UK acceptance. BS EN 12845 Section 15 check valve recognition via LPS 1039 equivalent scope for UK fire protection systems.
Swing vs wafer vs detector check selection
Swing check. Gravity-closed hinged disc. Low pressure drop, slow closure on reverse flow. Preferred on fire pump discharge where smooth closure minimizes water hammer. Flanged or grooved end options.
Wafer check. Spring-loaded split disc. Compact face-to-face dimension (fits between ANSI flanges). Fast closure prevents backflow but can cause water hammer on high-velocity systems; coordinate with a shock absorber if used on high-pressure standpipe discharge. Best for space-constrained risers and FDC trim where swing check face-to-face is too long.
Detector check. Check valve with integral 5/8 inch bypass meter. Installed on underground water service entry for unauthorized-use detection. The bypass meter registers flow rates below 30 gpm (approximately a garden hose tap); large fire demand bypasses the meter through the main check disc.
Double detector check (DDCA). Two detector check valves in series with isolation valves and test cocks for backflow prevention on fire service. Required by USC FCCCHR and most municipal utilities where the building sprinkler system is not purely water-based (i.e., includes antifreeze, foam concentrate, or chemical additives).

Frequently asked questions
Does a check valve require annual testing? Yes. NFPA 25 Section 13.4 requires annual inspection of check valves for internal condition. Check valves on fire pump discharge are flow-tested annually during the fire pump churn and flow test per NFPA 25 Section 8.3. Detector check valves and DDCAs are tested annually per USC FCCCHR protocol with test cocks and gauges.
What causes check valve failure? Common failure modes: debris lodged on seat (prevents full closure, allows backflow), worn disc hinge pin (disc slams or chatters), corrosion of clapper or seat (fire pump discharge hot water can accelerate corrosion on non-listed valves). UL 312 listed valves use bronze trim resistant to fire water chemistry.
Is a DDCA required on every fire service entry? USC FCCCHR and most municipal utilities require DDCA where: the sprinkler system contains antifreeze, foam concentrate or chemical additives; the building is classified as high-hazard occupancy; or the local water purveyor mandates cross-connection control on fire service. Pure-water wet sprinkler systems may qualify for a single detector check instead.
What pressure class does the check valve require? Standard UL 312 fire protection check valve is 300 psi CWP, matching the UV0199 gate valve pressure class. High-rise fire pump discharge at 500 psi (Zone 2/Zone 3 standpipe) requires a 500 psi class check valve; verify pump discharge pressure on purchase order.
Can a check valve be installed horizontally or vertically? Swing check valves are installed horizontal (flow left-to-right) or vertical flow-upward per manufacturer orientation; vertical flow-downward is NOT permitted (gravity holds disc open and defeats backflow prevention). Wafer check valves tolerate any orientation including vertical down-flow.
