UK listing requirements

Fire sprinkler installations in the UK under Approved Document B of the Building Regulations 2010 require compliance with BS EN 12845 for automatic sprinkler system design, installation and maintenance. Insurance-led specifications additionally reference LPC Rules for Automatic Sprinkler Installations incorporating BS EN 12845, published by the Fire Protection Association.

Component listing under BS EN 12845 Section 4 requires sprinklers to be listed by a recognised third-party body. LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board, BRE Global) and FM Approvals are the UK-recognised listing bodies. UL Listed product is accepted where the UL scope is equivalent to the LPCB listing scope, typically demonstrated through LPS 1039 for automatic sprinkler heads.

For LPCB-specific projects (insurance-led or where the specification explicitly requires LPCB), verify the UL scope equivalence with the insurance surveyor. FM Approval on UV-3 sprinklers is accepted by FM Global UK and Gulf, and by UK insurance surveyors from RSA, Aviva, Zurich, Allianz, AXA Commercial and specialist fire property underwriters operating on the FM component listing standard.

Residential life safety sprinkler systems under BS 9251 require sprinklers listed for residential service under UL 1626 or an equivalent residential certification. UNIVAL UV-3 sprinklers are commercial-listed under UL 199 and do not currently carry UL 1626 residential listing; for BS 9251 projects, ValveAtlas coordinates Reliable Model RFC43 or Viking VK463 residential sprinkler supply through partner distribution.

London project types and sprinkler selection

Commercial office high-rise. City of London, Canary Wharf, Kings Cross, Paddington and White City commercial developments specify automatic sprinkler protection to BS EN 12845 OH1 or OH2 hazard. UV321 pendent QR at 68°C or 93°C ordinary temperature is the default selection. UV821 concealed pendent QR covers finished ceiling areas.
