Where butterfly valves are used in fire protection

Sprinkler zone isolation. NFPA 13 Chapter 16 and BS EN 12845 Section 15 require a listed indicating valve upstream of every sprinkler zone so the zone can be isolated for maintenance without shutting down the entire system. The UNIVAL UVB-G310 with integrated tamper switch satisfies both the indicating valve requirement (open/close visible at the gear operator) and the supervision requirement (tamper switch wired to the fire alarm control panel per NFPA 72).

Fire pump suction and discharge isolation. NFPA 20 Section 4.16 and FM Global Data Sheet 3-7 require listed isolation valves on the suction and discharge sides of every fire pump. For horizontal split case and vertical turbine pumps discharging at 175 to 250 psi, the UVB-G310 300 psi CWP rating covers the service. For high-rise fire pumps discharging at 500 psi (tall-building standpipe pressure zones), ValveAtlas coordinates the 500 psi-class butterfly valve variant on special order.

Standpipe zone control. NFPA 14 Chapter 6 and BS 9990 Section 7 require isolation on each standpipe zone. The UVB-G310 is the standard selection on Class I, Class II and Class III standpipe zones across commercial high-rise and residential high-rise.

Underground water main tie-ins. NFPA 24 and AWWA M-class water main service use listed butterfly valves at the property-line tap, at the sprinkler riser base and at isolation points along the underground loop. UVB-G310 covers the service down to 2″ and up to 12″ in grooved-end configuration.

Listings and code acceptance

UL 1091 and UL 262. UNIVAL UVB-G310 carries UL 1091 (butterfly valves for fire protection service) and UL 262 (gate valves for fire protection) equivalent scope listing. The UL certificate is issued to UNIVAL manufacturer and is provided in the ValveAtlas submittal package.

ULC listing for Canadian projects. The ULC listing covers the same SKU and is recognized under CAN/ULC-S543 for listing of sprinkler components. Quebec RBQ projects, Ontario projects under OBC Part 3 and Canadian projects referencing NFPA 13 Canadian edition accept the ULC certificate.

FM Approval. FM Approvals Class 1112 (indicating valves for fire protection) certifies UVB-G310 for FM-insured properties under FM Global Data Sheet 2-0. Insurance surveyors at FM Global, RSA, Aviva, Zurich, Allianz, AXA Commercial, Chubb, AIG, Travelers, Intact and Aviva Canada accept the FM certificate on their insured properties.

LPCB and UK acceptance. UK projects under BS EN 12845 and the LPC Rules accept the UL/FM listing where the UL scope is equivalent to LPCB listing under LPS 1041 for indicating valves. Verify the UL scope equivalence with the insurance surveyor for LPCB-specific specifications.

Substitution matrix from Victaulic, Nibco, Keystone and Milwaukee

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a grooved, wafer and lug butterfly valve? Grooved (UVB-G310) connects to grooved-end pipe via the UV11 or UV14 coupling and is the default on sprinkler risers. Wafer (UVB-W310) installs pin-between-flange between two flanges and is used where flanged pipe is already in service. Lug (UVB-L310) has threaded lugs allowing downstream removal without draining upstream pressure; used on fire pump discharge headers and at zone control where one side of the valve may need to be removed while the other stays pressurized.

Is the tamper switch integrated or separate? UVB-G310, UVB-W310 and UVB-L310 ship with factory-integrated SPDT tamper switch terminated at a junction box on the gear operator housing. The switch monitors valve position; closure of the valve triggers a supervisory signal at the fire alarm control panel per NFPA 72 Section 17.16 and BS EN 12845 Section 20.

What is the minimum and maximum size? UVB-G310 ranges 2″ through 12″ in grooved-end configuration covering standard sprinkler zone service. Larger sizes (14″, 16″, 18″, 20″, 24″) are available on 4 to 6 week special order for fire pump discharge mains and underground water main isolation.

Is UVB-G310 accepted on high-rise fire pump discharge at 500 psi? Standard UVB-G310 is rated 300 psi CWP. For fire pump discharge operating at 500 psi on tall high-rise buildings, ValveAtlas coordinates the 500 psi-class heavy-duty butterfly valve variant. Specify the pressure class on the purchase order and ValveAtlas will confirm stock position or factory lead time.

What temperature rating does UVB-G310 carry? Standard operating temperature is -10°C to +110°C (14°F to 230°F). Below -10°C, coordinate with ValveAtlas for low-temperature elastomer seat options. For hot-water fire protection service on foam systems above 110°C, coordinate the EPDM high-temp or PTFE seat variant.
