UNIVAL Cross-Reference: Tyco, Viking, Reliable and Victaulic Equivalents
Specifiers write fire protection submittals around the model numbers they know. When a project specifies a Tyco DPV-1 dry pipe valve, a Viking Model E, a Reliable DDX pre-action, or a Victaulic Style 07 coupling, the specifying engineer has a specific listing profile and dimensional standard in mind. This page maps UNIVAL catalog SKUs to those well-known competitor model numbers so that “or equal” substitution requests can be reviewed quickly against a listing-for-listing, size-for-size equivalent.
The tables below are built from the UNIVAL fire protection catalog and published data sheets from Tyco (Johnson Controls), Viking, Reliable Automatic Sprinkler and Victaulic. They compare dimensional fit, pressure class, end connection, listing profile (UL / ULC / FM) and intended service. Equivalent does not mean drop-in replacement in every case; the specifying engineer must approve the substitution and the installing contractor must verify hydraulic calculations, trim assemblies and supervisory wiring are compatible. See the “How to use this chart” section at the bottom.
Grooved couplings and fittings (Victaulic cross-reference)
UNIVAL grooved couplings are UL Listed, ULC Listed and FM Approved to AWWA C606 grooving dimensions, which is the same standard Victaulic publishes. The ends interchange with standard-cut grooved pipe. Gaskets are EPDM grade E for fire protection water service.
| Victaulic model | UNIVAL equivalent | Function | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Style 07 “Zero-Flex” rigid coupling | UV11 | Rigid coupling, 300 psi CWP | AWWA C606 grooving. Zinc-plated bolts standard. |
| Style 77 flexible coupling | UV14 | Flexible coupling, 300 psi CWP | Deflection per industry standard. Ideal for vibration and thermal movement joints. |
| Style 005 “FireLock” rigid | UV15 | Heavy-duty rigid coupling, up to 750 psi class | For high-pressure standpipe and fire pump discharge. UL/FM for 300 psi and 500 psi systems. |
| Style 177 flexible | UV16 | Heavy-duty flexible coupling | High-pressure flexible variant. |
| Style 47 / Style 995 transition | UV19 | Transition grooved coupling | Steel-to-copper, steel-to-PVC adapter couplings. |
| Style 750 reducing coupling | UV09 | Reducing coupling | Size-to-size reductions in grooved piping. |
| Style 741 flange adapter | UV78 | Grooved flange adapter | Connects grooved end directly to ANSI B16.1 Class 125 / 150 flanged components. |
| Style 72 mechanical tee (outlet) | UV305 | Grooved mechanical tee, outlet style | Branch line outlet without cutting or welding. |
| Style 920 mechanical cross (outlet) | UV307 | Grooved mechanical cross, outlet style | Four-way outlet. |
Size range: DN25 through DN400 (1″ through 16″) for the core coupling families. UL, ULC and FM certificates are issued against the dimensional standard and the listed pressure class, not against the manufacturer name, so the substitution is straightforward when the AHJ accepts the triple-cert UNIVAL line.

Projects that require ESFR for storage-rack protection or very large coverage areas should stay on the original specification. See the UNIVAL vs Tyco comparison, UNIVAL vs Viking comparison and UNIVAL vs Reliable comparison for product-by-product discussion, including when the competitor product is still the right answer.
Alarm valves (wet, dry, pre-action, deluge)
UNIVAL 300 psi class alarm valves (UVW-1511-300, UVD-2511-300, UVPR-5311-300 and UVPPD) carry UL Listed and FM Approved certifications. Trim kits are sold separately and include pressure gauges, retard chamber, water motor gong, drip and priming-line assemblies per NFPA 13.

How to use this chart for “or equal” submittals
Fire protection drawings and project specifications typically call out a manufacturer model and append “or approved equal” to allow substitution during procurement. When the installing contractor or distributor wants to propose UNIVAL, the substitution request needs to show:
First, a listing profile match. If the original specifies UL Listed, ULC Listed and FM Approved, the substitute must carry all three. If the original is FM Approved and the substitute is not, the substitution fails regardless of dimensional equivalence. UNIVAL UV-3 sprinklers K=5.6 carry UL + FM. Concealed pendent (UV820, UV821) and K=8.0 are UL only. Gate, butterfly and check valves carry the full UL + ULC + FM triple-cert profile.
Second, a dimensional and connection match. Grooved couplings need to meet AWWA C606 grooving dimensions and the coupling shall accept standard-cut groove pipe. Flanged valves need to match ANSI B16.1 Class 125 or 250 as specified. Threaded sprinklers are 1/2″ NPT standard, and some jurisdictions require 3/4″ NPT on larger-K sprinklers.
Third, a pressure class match. Fire pump discharge and high-rise standpipe both require 300 psi or 500 psi components, not 175 psi. The UV model numbering in the tables above calls out the pressure class at the end of the SKU (300 suffix = 300 psi). Verify before substituting.
Fourth, trim and accessory compatibility. Alarm valve substitutions need matched trim kits, retard chamber, water motor gong, supervisory pressure switch and drip line assembly. Pre-action substitutions need a solenoid valve that is listed with the releasing panel in use (Notifier / EST / Potter / Silent Knight). The UNIVAL alarm valves are supplied with listed trim kits in a single carton to keep the listing intact.
Once these four checks pass, the substitution request package goes to the specifying engineer with the UNIVAL data sheet, listing certificates, and dimensional drawing, along with a line-by-line comparison table showing how the UNIVAL SKU meets or exceeds the original specification. ValveAtlas prepares the full substitution package on request as part of our sales and technical support.
What this chart does not cover
The cross-reference above is for valves, couplings, sprinklers and standpipe accessories. It does not cover:
ESFR sprinklers (K=14.0, K=16.8, K=22.4, K=25.2). These are specific storage-occupancy sprinklers covered primarily by Tyco and Viking. UNIVAL does not currently publish an ESFR line, and projects specifying ESFR should stay on the original manufacturer.
Residential sprinklers listed to UL 1626. The UV-3 line is listed to UL 199 for light, ordinary and extra hazard commercial occupancies under NFPA 13. Residential sprinklers for NFPA 13R and 13D applications are a distinct product family. See the UNIVAL vs Reliable comparison for residential positioning.
Fire pumps and controllers. Fire pump packages (electric and diesel driven) are cross-referenced separately against Patterson, Aurora, Peerless and AC Fire Pump, with controller options from Metron, Firetrol and Tornatech. Contact ValveAtlas for fire pump package substitution requests.
Specialty foam, water mist and clean agent systems. These require dedicated engineering and are not covered here.
Frequently asked questions
Is an “or equal” substitution automatic if UNIVAL carries the same listings? No. “Or equal” means the specifying engineer retains final approval. Carrying equivalent listings is necessary but not sufficient. The engineer reviews the full substitution package (data sheet, dimensional drawing, listing certificates, trim kit compatibility, pressure class match, warranty terms) and approves or rejects. ValveAtlas prepares this package as part of our project sales support.
Will the Authority Having Jurisdiction accept UNIVAL on a Canadian project? Canadian jurisdictions under NBCC and provincial codes accept ULC Listed products for pressure-containing valves and grooved couplings in sprinkler service. UNIVAL gate valves, butterfly valves, check valves and grooved couplings carry ULC listings. UNIVAL sprinklers carry UL listings which are accepted under Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and most other provincial sprinkler standards that adopt NFPA 13 by reference. Confirm with the local AHJ on specific projects.
How does FM Approval affect the substitution? FM Global insured facilities typically require FM Approved components. UNIVAL K=5.6 UV-3 sprinklers carry FM Approval. UNIVAL alarm valves, gate valves, butterfly valves and check valves carry FM Approval. UNIVAL concealed pendent (UV820, UV821) and K=8.0 sprinklers do not carry FM Approval at this time. Projects under FM insurance with concealed pendent or K=8.0 requirements should stay on the original FM Approved specification.
Do UNIVAL couplings install on standard-cut groove pipe? Yes. UV11, UV14, UV15, UV16 and the related families are cut to AWWA C606 grooving dimensions, which is the published industry standard. Contractors use standard Roll Groove or Cut Groove tooling on schedule 10 or schedule 40 black steel pipe, and UNIVAL couplings install without special pipe preparation.
Does ValveAtlas supply the trim kits and accessories with UNIVAL alarm valves? Yes. UNIVAL alarm valves are supplied in a single-carton package with the listed trim kit, retard chamber, water motor gong, supervisory pressure switch, priming-line assembly and drip assembly. Purchasing the valve and trim together preserves the listing and saves the contractor from piecing together trim at the job site.
What happens to the manufacturer warranty when UNIVAL is substituted for Tyco, Viking, Reliable or Victaulic? UNIVAL carries its own manufacturer warranty, typical for fire protection products in the industry. The warranty on the substitute product (UNIVAL) replaces the original specified warranty. If the project specification includes a specific warranty-term requirement (for example, 10-year concealed pendent cover plate warranty), the substitution request should disclose the UNIVAL warranty term and let the engineer weigh the impact.
How long does it take ValveAtlas to issue a submittal package for a substitution request? Standard turnaround is 48 hours from receipt of the project specification and drawings. For stocked UNIVAL SKUs, we include current stock confirmation and delivery window in the submittal. For non-stock items, we include manufacturer lead time and any alternate UNIVAL models that could meet the specification from current stock.
