Cryogenic Gate and Globe Valves: BS 6364, −196 °C

Cryogenic Valves

Cryogenic gate and globe valves are used for isolation and flow regulation in LNG and industrial gas plants. An extended bonnet and austenitic stainless steel suitable for low temperatures are their key features; low-temperature testing to BS 6364 is performed as a type test or on request.

Overview

On gate valves, a vent hole in the wedge or body prevents liquid trapped between wedge and body from building up pressure. Globe valves are preferred on cryogenic lines that need flow regulation and tight shutoff. The valves must be installed with the stem vertical or pointing upward within a specified angle range; otherwise the gas column inside the bonnet does not form (see cryogenic valve installation mistakes).

Documentation and testing

On industrial projects the documentation package matters as much as the valve. We confirm the certificate and test scope for every line item at quotation stage:

  • EN 10204 3.1 material certificates for pressure-retaining and wetted parts, traceable by heat number
  • EN 10204 3.2 with third-party inspection, on request
  • Pressure test reports to API 598 or EN 12266-1: shell, seat and, where specified, gas tests
  • Fire-test certificates (API 607 / ISO 10497) for fire-safe type-tested designs
  • PMI reports for alloy and stainless materials
  • Dimensional, visual and coating inspection records
  • PED 2014/68/EU CE declaration for equipment within its scope
  • NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance statement for sour (H₂S) service

Frequently Asked Questions

At what angle should a cryogenic valve be installed?

So that an insulating gas column can form inside the extended bonnet, the stem is installed vertical or pointing upward, up to a specified angle from vertical. Horizontal or downward-pointing installation can cause the packing to freeze; confirm the permissible angle with the manufacturer.
