A correctly specified cryogenic valve can still fail in the field — because cryogenic performance depends on installation as much as design. These are the seven mistakes we see most often on LNG and industrial-gas projects, and how to avoid each one.
1. Installing the Extended Bonnet Off-Vertical
The vapor column inside the extension only forms when the bonnet points up (within the manufacturer’s allowed angle, commonly ±45°). Mounted horizontally, the packing runs cold, hardens and leaks. This is the single most common error.
2. Ignoring Cavity Relief Direction
Self-relieving seats or a cavity relief hole vent trapped liquid toward a defined side. Install the valve backwards and the relief points at the wrong line — overpressure risk on warm-up. Check the flow arrow and relief marking before welding.
3. No Cool-Down Procedure
Shock-cooling a warm valve distorts seats. Follow staged cool-down rates; crack the valve slightly open during initial chill where the procedure allows.
4. Wrong Gasket and Bolting for the Temperature
Standard gaskets and B7 bolting lose clamp at cryogenic temperature. Use the manufacturer’s specified spiral-wound/Kammprofile gaskets and low-temperature bolting (L7).
5. Moisture Left in the Line
Residual water becomes ice in seats and cavities. Dry the system (dew point per commissioning spec) before introducing cryogen.
6. Testing Acceptance at Ambient Only
Passing an ambient seat test proves little for −162 °C service — acceptance belongs to the BS 6364 / ISO 28921 type test and, where specified, production cryogenic tests.
7. Uninsulated Stem Extensions Iced Over
Ice buildup on the extension can block operation and, on actuated valves, mask stroke problems. Insulation and cold-box penetrations must follow the design drawings; leave the gland area accessible for maintenance.
