High Performance (Double Offset) Butterfly Valve: API 609

Industrial Butterfly Valves

In a high performance butterfly valve, the stem is offset both from the disc centerline and from the pipe axis. As the valve opens, the disc moves away from the seat quickly, reducing wear and torque, so it can operate at higher pressures and temperatures than standard butterfly valves.

API 609 Cat. BDouble offsetRPTFE / metalClass 150–600
Double offset high-performance butterfly valve with lever

Overview

Reinforced PTFE (RPTFE) seated types provide tight shutoff on Class 150–300 process lines; fire-safe seated types have a metal secondary seal behind the soft seat. Metal seated types are used at higher temperatures. Wafer, lug and double-flanged body options are available.

Documentation and testing

On industrial projects the documentation package matters as much as the valve. We confirm the certificate and test scope for every line item at quotation stage:

  • EN 10204 3.1 material certificates for pressure-retaining and wetted parts, traceable by heat number
  • EN 10204 3.2 with third-party inspection, on request
  • Pressure test reports to API 598 or EN 12266-1: shell, seat and, where specified, gas tests
  • Fire-test certificates (API 607 / ISO 10497) for fire-safe type-tested designs
  • PMI reports for alloy and stainless materials
  • Dimensional, visual and coating inspection records
  • PED 2014/68/EU CE declaration for equipment within its scope
  • NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance statement for sour (H₂S) service

Frequently Asked Questions

High performance or triple offset butterfly valve?

On clean process lines in Class 150–300 at moderate temperatures, an RPTFE-seated high performance valve is economical and sufficient. On critical lines requiring high temperature, metal-to-metal sealing, fire resistance or frequent operation, a triple offset valve is preferred.
