OS&Y vs NRS vs PIV selection
OS&Y gate (UV0199). Used where the valve is visible from within the building: sprinkler riser base, fire pump suction, fire pump discharge, standpipe zone control. The threaded stem rises visibly out of the yoke when open; the visible stem position is the indicating feature. Tamper switch on the yoke monitors open/close position.
NRS gate (UV0299). Used where the valve is buried or in a vault: underground water main tie-ins, main building shutoff in a vault. The stem does not rise externally; the operating nut at the top is turned by a tee-handle wrench (key). Indication is provided through a separate post indicator assembly (PIA) above grade, or through a valve-position monitoring device in the vault.
PIV (UV0800-IP). The above-grade indicator for a buried NRS gate valve. The PIV consists of a steel post extending from the buried valve to 32 to 40 inches above grade, with an indicator window showing “OPEN” or “SHUT” as the buried valve is operated via the wrench nut at the top of the post. NFPA 24 Section 6.3 requires PIV on underground water main tie-ins that serve fire protection systems where the water main enters the property.
Listings and code acceptance
UL 262. UV0199 and UV0299 carry UL 262 (gate valves for fire protection service) listing.
FM Approvals Class 1110/1120. UV0199 and UV0299 listed for FM-insured properties. FM surveyors, RSA, Aviva, Zurich, Allianz, AXA Commercial, Chubb, AIG, Travelers and Intact accept the FM certificate.
ULC listing for Canadian projects. CAN/ULC-S543 covers the SKUs for Canadian NFPA 13 projects.
LPCB and UK acceptance. BS EN 12845 Section 15 (valves) recognition via LPS 1039 equivalent scope. UK insurance surveyors confirm LPCB-specific acceptance.
Where gate valves are installed
Sprinkler riser base. UV0199 OS&Y immediately upstream of the wet alarm valve (UVW-1511-300), dry pipe valve (UVD-2511-300) or pre-action valve (UVPR-5311-300). Provides system isolation for maintenance and testing.
Fire pump suction. UV0199 OS&Y flanged on the suction side of every fire pump per NFPA 20 Section 4.16. Listed 300 psi CWP covers typical 100 to 175 psi standpipe service.
Fire pump discharge. UV0199 OS&Y flanged on the discharge side. Where high-rise fire pump discharge exceeds 300 psi (500 psi class for tall-building standpipes), coordinate with ValveAtlas for 500 psi-class flanged gate valve.
Underground water main tie-ins. UV0299 NRS gate in a valve vault at the property line, above which a PIV (UV0800-IP) is installed for visual indication. NFPA 24 Section 6.3 covers PIV requirements.
Standpipe zone control. UV0199 OS&Y at each standpipe zone inlet. NFPA 14 Chapter 6 requires listed indicating valve with tamper supervision.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between OS&Y and NRS? OS&Y has a rising stem (the threaded stem rises out of the yoke when opening, providing visual indication). NRS has a non-rising stem (stem stays internal; opening is indicated by a separate post indicator or vault-monitoring device). OS&Y is used above-grade where visible; NRS is used below-grade or in vaults.
Does UV0199 require a tamper switch? Yes. NFPA 72 Section 17.16 and BS EN 12845 Section 20 require tamper supervision on every indicating valve controlling a sprinkler or standpipe zone. UV0199 is shipped with factory-installed tamper switch on the yoke.
What pressure class covers high-rise fire pump discharge? Standard UV0199 is rated 300 psi CWP. For tall-building standpipe discharge at 500 psi (Zone 2 or Zone 3 high-rise pump discharge), ValveAtlas coordinates the 500 psi-class OS&Y gate variant. Specify the pump discharge pressure on the purchase order; ValveAtlas confirms stock position or factory lead time.
Can UV0299 NRS be used above-grade? Technically yes, but the NRS configuration has no visible stem to indicate open/close. Above-grade use of NRS requires a post indicator assembly (PIA) for visual indication, which defeats the purpose of NRS cost savings. Use UV0199 OS&Y above-grade; use UV0299 NRS only in buried or vaulted installations.
What is the difference between UV0800-IP PIV and post indicator assembly? UV0800-IP is the complete PIV: NRS valve + vertical buried stem + above-grade indicator post as one listed assembly. A PIA (post indicator assembly) is the post indicator portion alone, retrofit onto an existing NRS gate valve. ValveAtlas supplies both UV0800-IP complete PIV for new construction and PIA retrofits for existing installations.
