Canada–U.S.: Counter-Tariffs Are Now Live — and Escalating
Canada’s counter-tariff package took effect on September 8: duties on U.S. steel and aluminum doubled to 50%, with 15–50% tariffs applied across roughly 700 U.S.-origin product lines covering $27.6 billion in imports. For Ontario contractors the reach extends well beyond raw steel — fabricated structural components, piping, fasteners, doors and scaffolding are all touched. Within hours, Washington responded with five retaliatory proclamations of its own, and Ottawa paired the tariffs with a C$7.5 billion worker support fund for exposed industries.
Practical takeaway: assume tariff exposure on any cross-border BOM until proven otherwise. Confirm country-of-origin documentation on every quote, ask for tariff exposure as a separate line item, and revisit standing orders placed before September 8. NFPA 855: The 2026 Edition Is Out — BESS Specs Are About to Tighten
NFPA has released the 2026 edition of NFPA 855, the standard governing stationary battery energy storage systems. The headline changes: a Hazard Mitigation Analysis becomes the default requirement, large-scale fire testing gets stronger emphasis, explosion control provisions tighten, and coverage expands beyond lithium-ion to iron-air, nickel-hydrogen, zinc-bromide and hybrid supercapacitor chemistries.
Why it matters to our readers: with more than 3,000 data centers operating in the U.S. and another 1,500+ planned or under construction, BESS installations are multiplying on commercial sites — and each one drags fire protection scope with it: detection, suppression, deluge or water-spray zones, and the isolation and check valves that feed them. A reminder for UK-facing projects — the new edition of Approved Document B comes into force on 30 September. Second staircases become mandatory for new residential buildings over 18 m, sprinklers are required in all new care homes, and BS 476 national classifications continue their phase-out in favour of BS EN 13501. Tenders priced against the old guidance should be re-checked this week, not after the deadline.
