Buyers often ask us how it differs from the UL/FM approvals used in building fire protection. They certify very different things — and specifying the wrong one can cost you an approval at handover.

What API 607 Actually Certifies

API 607 (“Fire Test for Quarter-turn Valves and Valves Equipped with Nonmetallic Seats”) is a type test: a representative valve is exposed to a 750–1,000 °C flame for 30 minutes while pressurized, then operated. To pass, it must keep through-seat and external leakage below strict limits after the soft seats have burned away, sealing on a secondary metal-to-metal seat.

In short: an API 607 valve is designed to survive a fire and still shut off the line. That is why it is specified for hydrocarbon isolation, tank farms, refinery units and fire-water ring mains.

API 607 vs API 6FA vs ISO 10497

API 607 — quarter-turn valves with soft (nonmetallic) seats: ball and butterfly valves.

API 6FA — fire test for API 6D/6A pipeline valves; similar concept, pipeline scope.

ISO 10497 — the international equivalent of API 607; many valves carry both marks.

How UL/FM Approval Is Different

UL Listing and FM Approval, which dominate building fire protection in North America, certify that a valve is suitable as a component of a sprinkler or standpipe system per NFPA 13/14/20: pressure ratings, supervision (tamper switches), indicating position, cycle life and factory follow-up audits. A UL/FM gate valve is not fire-tested with a flame — it is approved to reliably control fire-water in a code-governed system.

Which One Do You Need?

Application

Specify

Building sprinkler/standpipe (NFPA 13/14)

UL Listed / FM Approved

Refinery, terminal, process isolation

API 607 / 6FA fire-safe

Industrial fire-water ring main (plant spec)

Often both requirements appear — check the project spec; FM trunnion ball valves with API 607 fire-safe design are common

For the building-codes side of this topic, see our guide Homologations UL, FM et ULC.
