A solenoid valve on the release line electrically opens on a trip signal from the fire alarm control panel. Release of diaphragm pressure allows supply water to push the clapper open and flow to all open nozzles or open sprinklers in the protected area simultaneously.

Unlike wet pipe, dry pipe and pre-action systems, deluge systems use OPEN sprinklers or OPEN water spray nozzles. The piping downstream of the deluge valve is empty (not supervisory air; no supervisory air is required for the valve logic). When the deluge valve trips, water fills the piping and discharges through every nozzle on the zone simultaneously, producing total-area protection.

Factory trim on UVPPD includes: electric solenoid (120V AC or 24V DC) on the release line, emergency release manual station, supply-side pressure gauge, diaphragm chamber pressure gauge, main drain, strainer with flushing connection, alarm line with pressure switch port and water motor gong connection.

Listings and code acceptance

UL 260. UNIVAL UVPPD carries UL 260 (deluge valves for fire protection service) listing. The UL certificate is issued to UNIVAL manufacturer.

UL listing for Canadian projects. UL listing covers the same SKU under CAN/UL-S543 for Canadian NFPA 13, NFPA 15 and NFPA 409 projects.

FM Approval. FM Approvals Class 1046 (deluge valves) certifies UVPPD for FM-insured high-hazard properties. FM Global, RSA, Aviva, Zurich, Allianz, AXA Commercial, Chubb, AIG, Travelers and Intact insurance surveyors accept the FM certificate on their insured properties.

LPCB and UK acceptance. UK projects under BS EN 12845 Section 14 and LPC Rules accept UL/FM listing where equivalent LPCB scope exists. UK aircraft hangar projects at military and civil aviation facilities reference LPS 1039.

Where deluge valves are used

Aircraft hangars. NFPA 409 Section 8 and FM Global Data Sheet 7-93 require deluge protection on hangar floors with Group I, Group II or Group III classification. Foam-water deluge on hangar floors with open foam-water sprinklers (NFPA 16). Toronto Pearson, Montreal-Trudeau, Boston Logan and London Heathrow hangar construction specifies UVPPD.

Transformer protection. NFPA 15 Section 7 and FM Global Data Sheet 5-4 require water spray deluge on outdoor and indoor transformers. Open water-spray nozzles (K=1.6 to K=2.0 smooth-bore) discharge at the transformer surfaces to cool the casing and suppress oil fire.

Chemical process protection. NFPA 15 water-spray systems on reactor vessels, storage tanks, loading racks and pumping stations in petrochemical and chemical plants.

Foam-water suppression. NFPA 16 foam-water deluge on flammable liquid storage, truck loading racks and hangar floors with aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF).

Commodity storage rack protection. High-challenge rack storage where in-rack sprinklers cannot be installed; ceiling-level deluge on open sprinklers provides total-area cooling.

Substitution matrix from Victaulic, Tyco, Viking, Reliable

Victaulic FireLock Series 745 deluge valve. Substitute UNIVAL UVPPD. For transformers: UV/IR flame detection. For chemical process: LHD, UV/IR or pneumatic rate-of-rise detection tubing. NFPA 72 Chapter 17 covers detection installation. Detection wires to the fire alarm panel, which energizes the solenoid on the deluge release line.

How is the deluge valve reset after trip? After fire department all-clear and system drain-down, the diaphragm chamber is re-pressurized through the priming line from the supply. The emergency release manual handle is returned to the closed position, and supervisory status is restored. No supervisory air is required for the piping (unlike dry pipe or pre-action).

What is the trip time on a deluge valve? UVPPD trips in 1 to 3 seconds from solenoid energize. Water delivery time through the discharge piping depends on pipe length and density; NFPA 15 Section 7.4 sets 30-second water-on-target for water-spray systems.

Does the deluge valve have supervisory air? No. Deluge systems use empty piping (atmospheric) downstream of the valve. Supervision is provided by the detection system, not by supervisory air pressure.

Can UVPPD be used for foam-water? Yes. UVPPD combined with a bladder-tank or balanced-pressure proportioner and foam-water sprinklers provides NFPA 16 compliant foam-water deluge. ValveAtlas coordinates the proportioner and foam concentrate supply as a companion package.

Contact ValveAtlas for a deluge valve quotation

For deluge valve quotations, aircraft hangar, transformer, chemical process or foam-water submittal packages substituting UNIVAL for Victaulic, Tyco, Viking or Reliable specifications on Toronto, Montreal, New York, Boston or London projects, email the project specification to burakpadr@gmail.com or use the contact form.
