The UVD-2511-300 is the differential-action dry pipe valve with integrated accelerator provision, priming chamber, low-air alarm connection and drain manifold.

This page is the technical reference for specifying engineers, construction firms, EPC project firms and mechanical subcontractors selecting dry pipe valves on fire protection systems governed by NFPA 13 Chapter 7, NFPA 25 Chapter 5, BS EN 12845 Section 6 and the NYC Mechanical Code.

UNIVAL dry pipe valve range

UNIVAL SKU

Type

Pressure class

Trim

Listings

Sizes

UVD-2511-300

Differential dry pipe valve with accelerator provision

300 psi CWP water; 80 psi air supervisory

Complete factory trim: priming chamber, low-air alarm line, drain manifold, pressure gauges, water motor gong connection

UL and FM

3″ to 8″

How a dry pipe valve works

The UVD-2511-300 uses a differential-area clapper: the system-side air pressure (typically 40 psi) acts on a larger area than the water-side supply pressure (typically 100 to 175 psi), holding the clapper closed despite the pressure imbalance. When a sprinkler opens, system air bleeds to atmosphere, the differential collapses, the clapper trips, and water flows through the valve into the dry piping.

NFPA 13 Section 7.2.3.5 sets a maximum trip time of 60 seconds on systems up to 750 gallons and 90 seconds on systems up to 1500 gallons. UVD-2511-300 accelerator provision meets this requirement on large-capacity dry systems. Factory trim on UVD-2511-300 includes: differential clapper, priming chamber with priming water connection, supply-side pressure gauge, system-side pressure gauge, 2″ main drain, low-air supervisory pressure switch connection at 10 psi below system setpoint, quick-opening device (accelerator or exhauster) connection, water motor gong alarm line with pressure switch port.

Listings and code acceptance

UL 260. UNIVAL UVD-2511-300 carries UL 260 (dry pipe valves for fire protection service) listing. See Test and Drain Valves.

Frequently asked questions

What air pressure does the dry pipe valve require? Typical system air pressure is 40 psi minimum to maintain the differential against 100 to 175 psi water supply pressure. Set supervisory air between 40 and 50 psi with a 20 psi low-pressure alarm. UNIVAL UVD-2511-300 manual provides exact differential ratio and minimum air pressure for each water supply pressure range.

Can nitrogen replace compressed air? Yes. Freezer warehouse and corrosion-sensitive environments use nitrogen instead of compressed air to prevent moisture-driven internal corrosion of the dry piping. Listed nitrogen generators (General Air Products or equivalent) deliver 98 percent pure nitrogen at 40 to 50 psi system setpoint.

How often is the dry pipe valve trip tested? NFPA 25 Section 13.4 requires annual trip test with full flow (without water) and triennial trip test with full flow (with water). Full flow trip with water validates the 60-second trip time and water delivery to the inspector’s test connection.

Does UVD-2511-300 need a priming water system? Yes. The priming chamber above the clapper holds a small volume of priming water to form the water seal against the air pressure. Priming water connection is part of the factory trim. Priming water is refilled from the supply-side pressure tap after each trip.

What is the difference between dry pipe and pre-action? Dry pipe system uses supervisory air to hold the clapper closed and trips on sprinkler operation. Pre-action uses supervisory air plus a detection system (typically smoke or heat) that must both signal before the preaction valve trips, preventing accidental waterflow from sprinkler damage (used in data centres and museums).

Contact ValveAtlas for a dry pipe valve quotation

For dry pipe valve quotations, submittal packages substituting UNIVAL for Victaulic, Tyco, Viking or Reliable specifications on Toronto, Montreal, New York, Boston or London projects, email the project specification and drawings to burakpadr@gmail.com or use the contact form on our website.
